Hurricane Wilma Hits Area, Numerous Salvage Operations Underway

TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale, a Broward County based company, announced that it has mobilized three salvage teams to respond to the destruction left by Hurricane Wilma. "Our office normally operates on five telephone lines. Today we have one working and a generator supplying some lights for our office staff," reported Larry Acheson, President and Founder of TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale. "We consider ourselves fortunate, though. Many other people don�t have a roof over their heads."

The salvage teams will operate in the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Stuart areas. Some operations need lift bags while others need a crane. One of the most challenging salvage operations is re-righting and raising an inverted 56' Sea Ray in Stuart. Another is interesting salvage is a 50' Viking with two sailboats on top of it. The divers discovered that the keel of one of the sailboats is embedded in the foredeck of the Viking.

Another challenge came when it was announced that the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show would take place. TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale is the official towing company of the show, assisting the yachts as they maneuver against the wind and current to enter their slips. "We are fortunate to have many skilled, professional captains in our employ," remarked Acheson. "We were able to fulfill our obligations to Show Management, our salvage customers and our towing and assistance customers without sacrificing service."
