TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale announces the completion of a two year project to refurbish the Richard L. Becker, a 96' Offshore Supply Vessel. Purchased from the oil fields of Louisiana in late 1998, the 96' steel-hulled vessel built by Graham Marine has undergone a number of changes. "We bought the vessel with the plan to expand our towing and salvage operation to allow for long distance operations," states Larry Acheson, founder and President of TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale. "We discovered that by making a few modifications, the vessel could meet a growing number of service needs for the marine community."

Along with increasing its potable water supply to over 12,000 gallons, a load line was acquired allowing for international voyages. The on deck crane was refitted and has a 9000 lb. lifting capacity with a 41 foot reach. "Many of our customers, including ships and research organizations, enjoy the expansive deck area and easy access to the crane," remarks Capt. Kevin Collins, General Manager of TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale. Capt. Collins, supervised the refit of the vessel.

One of the most innovative modifications is the NATO grid. This grid allows for the attachment of a multitude of equipment to the deck of the vessel without the need to weld. "This provides a fast, efficient platform for mobilization and demobilization of equipment for our customers," adds Capt. Acheson. "This saves our customers time and money."

The vessel was named after a long time friend of Capt. Acheson who died unexpectedly of a heart attack several years ago. "Richard L. Becker was a marine surveyor who lived and worked in the Ft. Lauderdale area for many years," states Capt. Acheson. "Rick believed in finding ways to help with the growth and development of the marine industry. We feel the same way and continue to modify and adjust our business to bring that service to the community."

The Richard L. Becker is docked on the ICW in Dania Beach, but will be on display Friday, March 19, 2004 at Bahia Mar Marina in Ft. Lauderdale. TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale was founded in 1989 by Larry Acheson. The company operates from two ports and provides towing and assistance to boaters in all of Southeast Florida and the Bahamas. The TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale operation has conducted thousands of salvage operations over the years and routinely assists law enforcement with search and rescue operations. I really appreciate the job that your team did for us, it was phenomenal! 3 of the placements were within 3 feet of each other and the other one was about 10 feet away. You couldn't have hit that any better. Again, I really appreciate it! You guys did a great job! I will be giving you a call for our next job in June.
